Asbestos is such a hot topic, as it is all over the media. You think you know everything, but do you really know the facts about asbestos? Below are some unique facts about asbestos.

  • Asbestos origin is Greek. It means inextinguishable.
  • Asbestos began being mined as early as 5,000 BC. It was believed to be mined in Cyprus, Greece, Sweden, and Finland.
  • Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher, first mentioned asbestos in 300 BC.
  • The effect asbestos has on health was first noted by Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder in the 12th Century.
  • Charlemagne, a Roman Emperor, was rumored to have a tablecloth made of asbestos fibers. He died of pleurisy on 814. Pleurisy is one of the many illnesses caused by asbestos exposure.
  • Asbestos became a popular fiber used in construction as early as 1727. It was cheap and very durable.
  • In 1820, Aldini, an Italian scientist, uses asbestos for fireproof clothing.
  • The Federal Employers Liability Act was passed in 1908. It was to protect railroad workers from asbestos exposure and other injuries.
  • In 1924, the first case of asbestosis is confirmed. Asbestosis is a severe respiratory illness only caused by asbestos.
  • In 1973, the first major lawsuit about asbestos caused an onslaught of over 25,000 more.

As you can see, asbestos has been used for a very long time and it was documented as being hazardous early on. Asbestos was inexpensive, durable, and fire-retardant, which made it perfect for the construction of buildings, homes, ships, and even vehicles. Today, asbestos is a mainstream topic of concern, because of the illnesses it causes. Cancer and respiratory problems are at the top of the list.
